Best Fishing around, Osprey Photograph!

Here is an amazing Osprey Photograph from Miguel Lasa. As most people know, Ospreys are the best fisherman around!

The Osprey tolerates a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near a body of water providing an adequate food supply. It is found on all continents except Antarctica although in South America it occurs only as a non-breeding migrant.

As its other common name suggests, the Osprey’s diet consists almost exclusively of fish. It has evolved specialised physical characteristics and exhibits unique behaviour to assist in hunting and catching prey

RauschenbergOne of Captiva’s Favorite Artist, Robert Rauschenberg

Iconoclastic, generous, inventive, impulsive, sensitive, gregarious, prodigious: these are just some of the words to describe Robert Rauschenberg and the art he has been making now for 50 years. From the age of 38, when he received the grand prize at the Venice Biennale in 1964, Rauschenberg has been a pivotal figure in the art of our time.

Rauschenberg is also known as one of Captiva’s favorite artist. His well known studio is located on the Island and is still running and producing great work from all of the talented people who keep it going.

Click here to purchase Rauschenberg: Art and Life. This revised edition of the classic biography of the artist, first published in 1994, adds 36 new pages to cover the significant moments in the last ten years of his career, including his monumental career retrospective at the Guggenheim in 1997.

Island Flora And Fauna Seen Through The Eyes Of Renowned Local Author, Charles Sobczak, Sanibel & Captiva

Art, Captiva, Entertainment, Photography, Sanibel

asp-press-shotIsland Flora And Fauna Seen Through The Eyes Of Renowned Local Author, Charles Sobczak, Sanibel & Captiva

If you love nature and live on Sanibel or enjoy time on the Island as a visitor, there is one book that is a “must have” for your personal reference library, Living Sanibel, a nature guide for Sanibel & Captiva Islands by renowned resident author, Charles Sobczak   There is something to “tickle everyone’s outdoor world fancy” in this amazing, comprehensive field guide that includes 540 full-color photographs, illustrations and trail maps.

On March 2, 2010 at 10 a.m., Charles Sobczak will provide a program for The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum.  He will share his experiences compiling the material for his most recent book which not only provides a pictorial guide of Sanibel’s critters but also includes identification tips, anecdotal field experience and practical information about the Island’s kayak and hiking trails. The emphasis of the program will be shells, which hold a special fascination for Charles. The program is free with admission to the Museum.

The Shell Museum has more than a passing interest in Charles’ new release.  Charles’ son, Blake, spent several days at the Museum taking photographs of Sanibel shells in the Museum’s holdings.  Dr. José H. Leal Director/Curator of The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum contributed a number of photographs from the Museum’s online guide to the shells of southwest Florida and served as the project’s shell expert.

“Living Sanibel reminds us once again of the vast natural treasures and biodiversity so well preserved on Sanibel, and will remain the definitive treatise on the islands’ natural history and environment for years to come,” shared Dr. José H. Leal.

Charles’ avocation as an author began in 1999 with the first of four novels, Six Mornings on Sanibel. In 2005 Charles made the switch to non-fiction, penning the award winning Alligators, Sharks & Panthers: deadly encounters with Florida’s Top Predator – Man.

“Charles is sure to captivate the audience,” reports Kathleen E. Hoover, the Museum’s Public Relations manager. “You only have to be with Charles for a few minutes to experience his unbridled enthusiasm for Sanibel and its unique biodiversity.  His passion for sharing the Island’s story is contagious!”

A book signing will take place immediately following the program. For further information about the program please call Diane Orvis Thomas, Public Programs Specialist Programs Specialist, at 239.395.2233.

SANIBEL ROTARY CLUB PREPARES FOR 27TH ANNUAL ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR,
RAISING FUNDS FOR HAITI RELIEF EFFORTS

The Rotary Club of Sanibel-Captiva is gearing up for its Annual Arts and Crafts Fair being held on the grounds of The Community House on Sanibel Island, Florida. The event, coming this weekend (February 13th and 14th) marks the 27th year the club has conducted a juried fair of crafts persons and artisans on the island.

dscn6657-466x350The fair includes 104 vendors selected from a pool of applicants and includes a multitude of artistic disciplines such as painting, woodcarving, sculpture and photography. Returning this year is renowned Sanibel artist Ikki Matsumoto. Mr. Matsumoto and his wife, Polly, have again generously donated a design for the fair’s commemorative t-shirt.  The shirts, available for sale at the fair, are a popular fixture of island attire.

lee-almas-robert-monk-chet-sadler-warren-teigen-and-shirley-jewellThis year marks a new endeavor for Rotarians as the fair has been expanded to include silent auction and raffle items from local businesses in an effort to raise additional funds for Haiti relief.  Among the items donated are a piece of fine jewelry from Congress Jewelers and a one week stay in a Sanibel beach condominium from VIP Vacation Rentals.

The Club hopes to raise in excess of $50,000 which will be used to benefit local organizations providing food and educational services, Rotary sponsored international projects providing clean water and polio immunization, and to maintain the Club’s two endowed university scholarships awarded to local students.  In addition, the Club intends to increase its effort to assist Rotary affiliated relief efforts for those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
