The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, Sanibel Island, Sanibel Shelling

The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, Dr. José H. Leal, director/curator for The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum will present his program, “Rare and Unusual Shells from the Museum Collection.” The rarity of some of the Museum’s collection will be compared with other world rarities like the Mona Lisa and the Hope Diamond. Many of these rare shells have been donated to the museum’s collection or are on permanent loan. Some of the shells that will be highlighted in the presentation include: Lyncina broderipii, Barycypraea fultoni amorimi , Zoila perlae perlae, Umbilia capricornica, and Umbilia armeniaca.

The other day I was at the beach taking pictures of the sunset when I saw this family enjoying Sanibel Beach too. They are from MI down here for a Sanibel Vacation. The Islands sure beat the cold weather right now up north! Thanks for the picture guys!

“SANIBEL UNCORKED” 2010 WINTER WINE FESTIVAL, San-Cap Optimist Club

The San-Cap Optimist Club announces its second Winter Wine Fest called “Sanibel Uncorked!” This year it will be held on February 24th from 5 to 9 PM at the beautiful Lily Co., Jewelers, 520 Tarpon Bay Road, across from Bailey’s General Store where there is plenty of parking.

At least four wine purveyors, each representing an excellent selection of wineries, varietals, and vintages will be available to taste. All wines will be available for purchase at Bailey’s. This is a prime opportunity to taste many fine wines before you buy.

A silent auction will be held offering many fine prizes such as vacation packages, dazzling jewelry, restaurant gift certificates, local activities tickets, theater and concert tickets, works of art, gift baskets, outstanding merchandise – and of course many wines. Also available to patrons will be Lily Bucks, discount certificates from Lily Co.

Sanibel and Captiva Blind Pass Ecosystem Restoration Project, Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Blind Pass Ecosystem Restoration Project, Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, Sanibel & Captica. Friday,at Turner Beach Regional Park, was the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Blind Pass. Since the 1920’s, Blind Pass has been an unstable ecosystem due to it’s ever changing water ways. It now will provide a stable pass opening. With the new water way, it increases the habitat for mangroves, seagrasses, shorebirds, benthic invertebrates and fisheries. Brian Bigelow from the Lee County Board of County Commissioners was the MC of the event. Other important people responsible for the success of the new Blind Pass are as fallows. The First Annual Chix-N-Stix Ladies Fishing Tournament, Sanibel & Captiva Fishing

Last night was a BLAST! The first annual Chix-N-Stix Fishing Tournament held their Anglers meeting at Fish-Tale Marina, they did an AMAZING job, especially given the weather! Kristi Riley and Lacey Rush did a FANTASITIC job putting this huge event together! There was a live and silent auction to benefit Operation Open Arms (supporting our troops www.operationopenarms.net) items included, vacation packages, fishing charters, jewelry, art, fishing equipment, baskets and more! Last evening was perfect at the Mucky Duck restaurant, the sky was clear, the temperature was nice and the atmosphere was full of cheer & positivity. People crowded the beach at the Mucky Duck, to enjoy Captiva’s famous sunset while listening to live music and enjoying some drinks. This is one of the best times of the year to be on Captiva, the humidity is low, the air is crisp and the sunsets are priceless! That being said, my fiancé and I are visiting again in September to plan our wedding in Sanibel next October (2010!)  I just have to share some of my favorite pictures because it’s almost a year later and I keep flashing them saying every time, “it looks exactly like this EVERY day!”  We can’t wait to hit the Great White Grill this year as my fiancé was raised a Steelers fan in highly popular Redskins territory!  Hope you enjoy these pictures as much as we do! “Hi folks!! I just returned from yet another amazing trip to Sanibel, my home-away-from-home!  And I just had to finally send in a picture
after seeing your fun emails every day! This “point of view” photo was taken while I was sitting on the lovely Sanibel beach (lounge chairs are for wimps! haha)….in front of Sanibel Moorings on East Gulf Dr. My boyfriend, Mike, stands at the Gulf’s edge while taking a break from building sand castles. I was just taking it all in and enjoying my three favorite things - Sanibel, the sand between my toes, and the love of my life, Mikey I’d love to see this on your site! Take care!”

Fishing on Sanibel Island

Johnny Durand caught this 32 inch Snook off West Gulf Beach in the troff. He used light tackle with a 30 lb leader and a 2/0 circle hook on cut bait. Caught and Released. He’ll be out there fishing on Sanibel Island again Sunday. Thank you for sending in the photo Johnny D!
