Shell Museum Hosting Founder of PURRE to address: “WATER QUALITY –Cleaning up our own Backyard”, Sanibel FL

On Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., Mike Valiquette, founder of People United to Restore our Rivers and Estuaries (PURRE), will present a talk entitled,Water Quality - Cleaning up our Own backyard.”

Florida residents’ lifestyles and its water are inseparably linked. Yet storm water runoff full of chemicals from agricultural operations and fertilized landscapes is allowed to drain untreated into local water. Overflow from sewage and septic systems fouls local water. Dangerous algae outbreaks plague Florida’s beaches, lakes, rivers, and estuaries, killing wildlife and closing swimming areas.

Local Therapist Organizes Equipment Donation Drive for Haiti

Captiva, Charity Events, Sanibel

Watching the earthquake coverage of Haiti, Sanibel resident and physical therapist Rachel Tritaik, like many, was deeply concerned.  Without adequate therapy and equipment, the thousands of earthquake survivors with amputations will face immeasurable challenges if they are unable to walk. “Close friends of mine, a prosthetist and a fellow physical therapist, will be travelling to Haiti this spring to volunteer with the organization Healing Hands for Haiti. After providing physical therapy services to many amputees in my career, I know how important appropriate walking aids are to being independent, so I’ve decided to organize a donation drive for mobility devices” says Rachel.  “Healing Hands for Haiti has provided rehabilitation services and educational programs in Haiti for 10 years.  They operated the only physical rehabilitation clinic in the country, and the clinic was 80% destroyed during the earthquake.” 4272017460_10019679c6

asp-press-shotIsland Flora And Fauna Seen Through The Eyes Of Renowned Local Author, Charles Sobczak, Sanibel & Captiva

If you love nature and live on Sanibel or enjoy time on the Island as a visitor, there is one book that is a “must have” for your personal reference library, Living Sanibel, a nature guide for Sanibel & Captiva Islands by renowned resident author, Charles Sobczak   There is something to “tickle everyone’s outdoor world fancy” in this amazing, comprehensive field guide that includes 540 full-color photographs, illustrations and trail maps.

On March 2, 2010 at 10 a.m., Charles Sobczak will provide a program for The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum.  He will share his experiences compiling the material for his most recent book which not only provides a pictorial guide of Sanibel’s critters but also includes identification tips, anecdotal field experience and practical information about the Island’s kayak and hiking trails. The emphasis of the program will be shells, which hold a special fascination for Charles. The program is free with admission to the Museum.

The Shell Museum has more than a passing interest in Charles’ new release.  Charles’ son, Blake, spent several days at the Museum taking photographs of Sanibel shells in the Museum’s holdings.  Dr. José H. Leal Director/Curator of The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum contributed a number of photographs from the Museum’s online guide to the shells of southwest Florida and served as the project’s shell expert.

“Living Sanibel reminds us once again of the vast natural treasures and biodiversity so well preserved on Sanibel, and will remain the definitive treatise on the islands’ natural history and environment for years to come,” shared Dr. José H. Leal.

Charles’ avocation as an author began in 1999 with the first of four novels, Six Mornings on Sanibel. In 2005 Charles made the switch to non-fiction, penning the award winning Alligators, Sharks & Panthers: deadly encounters with Florida’s Top Predator – Man.

“Charles is sure to captivate the audience,” reports Kathleen E. Hoover, the Museum’s Public Relations manager. “You only have to be with Charles for a few minutes to experience his unbridled enthusiasm for Sanibel and its unique biodiversity.  His passion for sharing the Island’s story is contagious!”

A book signing will take place immediately following the program. For further information about the program please call Diane Orvis Thomas, Public Programs Specialist Programs Specialist, at 239.395.2233.

The Number One Thing to Know about Sanibel Shelling

Sanibel is often referred to as the shelling capital of North America. Strolling the beaches and shallow water surrounding Sanibel and Captiva over 300 species of shells can be discovered.  These treasures are what lure many island visitors.

The number one thing to know for all Sanibel Shelling enthusiast, only take dead shellfish.

To protect this important economic and biological asset, in the late 1980s, the city of Sanibel petitioned the Florida Marine Fisheries Commission (MFC) to restrict live-shelling and the MFC passed a special Sanibel Shelling Rule restricting live collection to two specimens of any one species per day per person.  In addition, non-residents were required to purchase a State saltwater products fishing license.  This rule remained in effect for six years, but it was difficult to enforce.
