The Sanibel-Captiva Optimist Club 31st Annual 4th of July Road Rally, Sanibel Florida

The tradition continued for the   The Sanibel-Captiva Optimist Club 31st annual 4th of July Road Rally! Participants  meet at Timbers for check in and started the rally there! For those of you who don’t know about this annual island event, the Road Rally is a scavenger hunt for Answers to clever questions…it is not a race! Everyone was in a good mood and was ready and eager for their challenge. Winners will be announced later this week after all of the scores have been counted. Click below for photos of the event!

Today was the Sanibel 4th of July Parade! Tons of people came out to enjoy of of the Island’s most popular event! The parade went great with over 50 parade members driving down the street! Live Feed of Sanibel’s 4th of July Parade at The Community House

The Community House will be showing the Sanibel’s 4th of July parade live! Local filmmaker Rusty Farst and Gene Rogers of Attic Chat Productions will be shooting the entire parade and be screening it live for everyone to see at the Sanibel Community House! This is the first time ever a live show of the 4th of July celebration will be streamed as it is happening! 3 Cameras will be shooting from the street, next to the judges, and an eye in the sky from the high lift bucket and will be edited live! Besides screening live inside The Community House, they will be re-showing the parade right after to let you see it again with commentary from Star Evette Zurbriggen.

Update on the Deep Horizon Florida Oil Spill. What is happening to Sanibel & Captiva because of the BP Oil Spill? Our Beaches are still Beautiful and our water is Clean! Great time for a Island Vacation!

Yesterday, we talked to Lee County Florida District 4 Commissioner, Tammy Hall. We were extremely happy to hear what she had to say! Although the Deep Horizon Florida Oil Spill has harmed a lot of things, Sanibel and Captiva are still SAFE! We learned that our water is clean and our beaches are still beautiful and this is actually a great time to visit Sanibel & Captiva. Check out our backyard and enjoy a wonderful Island Vacation!

Tamara Pigott, Executive Director of the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau also talked to us on camera to express what a great time it is to take a vacation in our unspoiled waters of SWFL. Not only are the beaches on Sanibel & Captiva OIL FREE, there are lots of other great reasons to visit! There are great deals on accommodations, shopping, restaurants and services. The Official Sanibel Island & Captiva Island Chamber of Commerce, Update on the Deep Horizon Florida Oil Spill – Our Beaches are Clean

The information below was provided by The Official Sanibel Island & Captiva Island Chamber of Commerce about the Florida Oil Spill.

“Our function is to keep everyone informed with on going information with continual updates” – Ric Base, President of The Official Sanibel Island & Captiva Island Chamber of Commerce.

Our Beaches are Clean and Open
The only oil on our beaches is suntan oil!

Updated June 11, 2010 1:30 p.m.
At this time, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has not impacted Sanibel, Captiva or Fort Myers Beach. The Florida Division of Emergency Management does not expect the oil to impact the Sanibel/Captiva/Fort Myers Beach area between now and Monday, June 14. Forecasts are being made in 72 hour increments. There are no projections beyond that time frame.

Officials on Sanibel, Captiva and Fort Myers Beach are monitoring the situation closely and will respond accordingly to any potential impact on our area. If you are traveling to the destination within the next few days, you can monitor the websites below for the latest updates on the spill and check back with this site for specific information regarding Sanibel, Captiva and Fort Myers Beach .

J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island is reporting, “There are currently no impacts to our refuge waters. The beaches are clean and open.”

We went to the Mucky Duck located on Captiva to capture some of the people having a great time on their Memorial Day. The Mucky Duck is one of the best places we have ever been to in the evening for some food and the sunset. Santa’s Workshop on the Luminary Trail, The Sanibel Community House, Luminary Festival

Santa’s Workshop on the Luminary Trail, Santa’s Workshop will be held on Luminary Night, Friday, December 4 from 5:30 to 9 pm at The Community House. As part of the Luminary Festival, Santa’s Workshop is designed so the whole family can follow the luminary trail. Come on home to our “house” with Mrs. Claus, elves and fun activities. Upon arrival you will be greeted with a brass ensemble and caroling featuring the BIG ARTS Choir, a flute quartet around the tree, photos with elves, mini golf, craft station, ginger bread cookie decorating, games and more. We will have a holiday wassail bowl, and punch and hor d’ourves will be served. We are one of the trolley stops, so join our workshop as part of your luminary experience! The Community House is located at 2173 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel (472-2155).

Sanibel & Captiva New Year Resolutions & Goals

Sanibel City Manager Judie Zimomra: “To work harder towards our goal of maintaining Sanibel as a great community where we each can live the Sanibel vision. Resolution: To attend 363 fitness classes at the Sanibel Recreation Center (we are closed Christmas & Thanksgiving Days)”

Salli Kirkland, Billy’s Bikes: “My New Years goal this year is to do a better job of thanking people. We live in such a giving community, with volunteers, donors, friendly merchants, helpful neighbors…I forget sometimes to acknowledge all those gifts bestowed on myself, my family and our community. In 2010 I will be looking for better ways to say thank you, and also ways to better thank God for my good fortune and good health.”

Barb Harrington, RLR: “My resolution is to smile and stay as happy as possible. Happiness creates a positive energy that attracts good things and good people. It enables you to help others.”

Attonery Robert Monk: “Teach someone to fish.”

Sandy Ramset, SanCap One Source Reality: ”I resolve to not make any more Resolutions, which I generally don’t keep anyway.”
Every New Year’s eve I stay up to welcome in the New Year but, this year I’m gonna stay up just to make sure that 2009 is gone for good…Bring on 2010!!! Here’s hoping all of my fellow Islanders from here and far have a happy, healthy and safe New Year and wishing you the best of everything for 2010!
