Congratulations Amanda Podlasek for receiving a Full Scholarship to FGCUAmanda Podlasek, who is only 14 won a full scholarship to local university, Florida Gulf Coast University. Amanda competed in the Thomas Alva Edison Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Her advance project included a close look at red tide and was called “Comparing Filter Feeding of Karenia Brevis by Tunicates and Oysters”. Amanda goes to school at Canterbury and is in 8th grade, it is truly amazing that she did such a wonderful job, much better than most grown-ups could ever do. With help from Dr. Bruce Neil from the Sanibel Sea School, Amanda choose this project to help find a solution to the red tide we commonly experience here in Southwest Fl. Congratulations Amanda! |

Yesterday was Sanibel’s Bailey Fest, located in the Bailey Center. It was a great time with lots of things to do, some of Sanibel’s best entertainment. There was singing, dancing, comedy acts, juggling, games, pumpking carving contest and a dunk tank. Even the Sanibel Fire & Rescue was there signing their 2010 calendars! With places like Biddles Bucket, the Grog shop, and Island Cinema, Bailey’s Center was the place to be. Lions and tigers and bears…oh my!!! Well, not quite! It was more like “Lizards and turtles and snakes!! Egads!” at the Sanibel Public Library’s last Summer Reading Program event. John Storms’ World of Reptiles was the main attraction. John brought several different reptiles from a small lizard and a skink to a 90 pound snapping turtle.
