Capt. Team DYS: A winning catch from last year’s inaugural tournament. Registration opens for ‘Ding’ Darling & Doc Ford’s Tarpon Tournament Registration has opened for the second annual “Ding” Darling & Doc Ford’s Tarpon Tournament, which takes place on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar and Grille on Fort Myers Beach to benefit the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island. Registration for the tournament, which debuted last year to rave reviews, is now open at www.dingdarlingtarpontourney.org. Entry fees are $500 per boat of up to four. One hundred percent of the purse will be awarded as tournament prizes. Participation is limited to 50 boats. New this year: The Silver King for “Ding” After-Party will be open to the public with limited tickets available at $50 for each non-fisherman, including dinner and a silent auction. Same as last year, the Captains Dinner will take place on Friday, May 4, at Doc Ford’s. Fishing will begin at 7 a.m. the next morning, once again with DNA testing and competition for the most fish caught and released. Again this year, award-winning Doc Ford murder-mystery series novelist Randy Wayne White will be participating in the tournament. “Last year’s tournament was a day of great action and getting together with a lot of local fishermen I haven’t seen in a while,” said White, a former area fishing guide. “I’m really looking forward to doing it again this year.” Doc Ford’s, with locations on both Sanibel Island and Fort Myers Beach, has again committed to being the title sponsor for the 2013 tournament, along with the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS). Proceeds will benefit wildlife and conservation education at the refuge. “There’s not another tarpon tournament like this in the area,” said Marty Harrity, Doc Ford’s co-owner. “Last year we had fishermen from all over the country.” “Doc Ford’s has been a faithful supporter of our efforts at ‘Ding’ Darling, helping greatly to bolster refuge programs and research to balance federal budget shortfalls,” said Birgie Vertesch, DDWS executive director. “We’re so grateful to them for this huge effort on our behalf.” For more information on sponsoring or participating in the tournament or After-Party, please contact Vertesch at 239-292-0566 or director@dingdarlingsociety.org. from 4-9 p.m. (Shuttle service will be available at Bailey’s).

The fun-filled evening, with the San-Cap Trust Co. as Grand Sponsor, will include a festive Polynesian luau with authentic Polynesian
dancers, live music, a delicious Polynesian dinner catered by Traditions and Bailey’s, and a fabulous array of auction and raffle prizes.

MAKE SURE YOUR CHILDREN DRESS SAFELY

  • Check that costumes are flame- retardant so little ones aren’t in danger near burning jack-o-lanterns and other fire hazards
  • Have them wear light-colored clothing that’s short enough to prevent tripping, and add reflective tape
  • Try make-up instead of a mask – masks can be hot and uncomfortable and – more importantly – they can obstruct a child’s vision (a dangerous thing when crossing streets and going up/down stairs)
  • Put reflective tape on costumes
  • Trick-or-treaters always should be in groups so they aren’t a tempting target for real-life goblins. Parents should accompany young children
  • Avoid hard plastic or wood props such as daggers or swords. Substitute with foam rubber which is soft and flexible

MAKE TRICK-OR-TREATING TROUBLE FREE

  • Make sure older kids trick-or-treat with friends. Map out a safe route so you will know where they will be, and tell them to stop only at familiar homes where the outside lights are on
  • Watch for traffic
  • Trick-or-treat while it is still light out. If it’s dark, make sure someone has a flashlight and only pick well-lighted streets
  • Make sure children know not to enter strange houses or stranger’s cars

TREATS

  • Children need to know not to eat their treats until they get home. One way to keep trick- or-treaters from digging in while they are still out is to feed them a meal or a snack beforehand
  • Parents should check all treats at home in a well-lighted place
  • Report suspicious treat or packaging to the Sanibel Police
  • What to eat? Only unopened candies and other treats that are in original wrappers. Don’t forget to inspect fruit and homemade goodies for anything suspicious. By all means, try not to let them eat everything all at once, or they’ll be feeling pretty ghoulish!

F.I.S.H. (Friends In Service Here) recently indicated their cupboards were just about bare as the need for food and assistance was rising. “This is always a difficult time of year for us,” stated Maggi Feiner, President of F.I.S.H., “season has not begun and resources are low”.

Though we have collected over 10,000 pounds of food for those in need, these economic times call for more to be done.  Today’s donation to F.I.S.H., our on island pantry, will assist them in fulfilling their immediate goals to feed families in need until more food donations can be collected.”

Bill Fellows, Vice President of F.I.S.H. expressed his appreciation to The Royal Shell Companies for “coming forward to assist when the need is very great.” The number of families with children and senior citizens being referred to F.I.S.H. continues to rise and the community is urged to drop off food items to F.I.S.H. whenever possible.
